Jewellery
Care
Whilst jewellery is generally resilient to every day
normal wear and tear it still requires being cared for in a manner to give a
lifetime of pleasure.
If looked after most items will require little
maintenance, if any, during its lifetime. Consideration does, however, need to
be given as to which material is used in the item chosen and can be dependant on
its owner’s lifestyle.
When you buy your jewellery it is reasonable for you to
expect it to retain much of its original lustre but it needs to be protected
from exposure to certain conditions.
Many people like to wear their jewellery all the time
and this is fine in most normal wear and tear situations.
However, it is recommended that you remove your
jewellery if you are carrying out heavy manual work, such as gardening or
building work, to prevent excessive scratching and damage and also before
swimming in a pool containing chlorine, as this can make the metal brittle
leading to cracking.
Take care to protect pearls from being easily scratched
and keep separate from other jewellery contact. To help prevent chains from
knotting link the two ends together with the clasp.
Normal wear and tear does eventually weaken jewellery
and it is important that you regularly check for damage such as cracked ring
shanks, broken stone retaining claws, weak chain clasps, etc. and attend to
before complete loss occurs.
When items are removed or stored make sure they are kept
apart in an appropriate jewellery case, the original gift box or soft jewellery
sleeves.
Should you feel you need to clean your jewellery, first
soak in a little warm mild soapy water and then carefully clean with an old soft
toothbrush making sure not to dislodge any stones or damage components. Rinse
and dry carefully.
In General, do not soak any jewellery containing stones,
coral or pearls, as some stones, such as emeralds and Blue John, will decay
faster than others.
For more stubborn stains cleaning is best achieved in an
ultra-sonic solution tank and your local jeweller may be able to assist to
rectify.
All white gold is actually off-white in colour. Most 9 and 18ct white gold items are enhanced by Rhodium plating to give a brighter reflective surface, however in time this wears off and will need re-plating should you require.
